While he feels that his academic interests have always been with science, he’s clear that the life and identity experiences he’s built since leaving home have been fundamentally shaped by his time with MPYT.
‘It’s had so much influence on how I approach people and friendships. I mean, University is hard enough as it is, but without the confidence I found with MPYT I would have really, really struggled. It’s taught me so much about the person I am and the person I want to be. I used to think of myself as a real introvert – someone who was withdrawn and needed a lot of time alone. But I’ve realised I’m actually quite extroverted, confident and very sociable. Of course, I still like my quiet time, but overall, I realise that if I don’t spend time around people, I get sad. I get a lot of energy from interacting with people’.
Buck feels that the desire to build friendships fostered in him by MPYT came hand in hand with his ability to reflect on the person he was, the things he liked about himself and the things that he wanted to change.
