Powys libraries are helping to tackle digital exclusion by gifting free mobile SIM cards to people who need help getting online, thanks to support from the National Databank and in partnership with the Good Things Foundation.
The scheme, available through staffed libraries across Powys, provides free SIM cards preloaded with mobile data, calls and texts. It is designed to support people who may be struggling to afford internet access or who have limited connectivity, helping them stay connected to essential online services and to friends, family and support networks.
Internet access is now essential for everyday life, from applying for jobs and managing benefits, to booking appointments, learning new skills, and staying in touch with loved ones. However, many people still experience data poverty, meaning that they cannot afford sufficient mobile data or a regular phone contract.
Through the National Databank, Powys libraries are able to help people to access free mobile data in a safe and supportive environment. The National Databank works in a similar way to a foodbank, but instead of food, it provides connectivity to people who need it most.
SIM cards are available to people who are:
- 18+ years old
- AND from a low income household
And qualifies in one or several of the following statements:
- Has no access or insufficient access to the internet at home
- AND/OR has no or insufficient access to the internet when away from the home
- AND/OR cannot afford their existing monthly contract or top up.
Library staff can talk through the scheme, check eligibility, and offer basic digital support.
This initiative forms part of Powys libraries’ wider commitment to digital inclusion, ensuring that everyone has access to information, services, and opportunities in an increasingly digital world.
