Y Lanfa Library Reopens After Major Refurbishment

13 Apr 2026

Welshpool’s Y Lanfa Library officially reopened on 20 March, inviting visitors back into a brighter, more accessible, and future‑focused community space.

The reopening follows an extended period of essential building work. During the project, additional structural improvements were identified to ensure the library meets long‑term accessibility and safety standards. Once construction was completed in February, staff worked quickly to relocate services from the temporary premises, preparing the new‑look library for public use within just a few days.

The refurbishment has delivered two new community rooms and significantly enhanced accessibility across the building, making the space more welcoming and inclusive for all users.

Curator Andrew Deathe and Operational Lead Georgina Hammond, along with the Cultural Services management team, have thanked staff and volunteers for their dedication in keeping services running and helping bring the refurbished library back to life.

What’s new

Visitors to the refreshed library will now benefit from:

  • Two flexible community rooms for workshops, talks and group activities
  • A larger, redesigned children’s area featuring decorative wall panels created by local artist David Goodman with contributions from local schools
  • A sound‑proof pod workspace, free to use for study, meetings or quiet work
  • A digital totem providing up‑to‑date opening times and What’s On information
  • Upgraded Wi‑Fi for faster, more reliable digital access
  • Energy‑efficient lighting and heating, plus new solar panels to reduce environmental impact.

A New Chapter for Community Activities

With the building complete, Y Lanfa is relaunching its expanded programme of events. Regular groups such as Knit and Natter, Chess Club and the Ukrainian drop‑in advice sessions are resuming, alongside special events including Belinda’s Easter children’s cooking workshop.

Staff say they are “over the moon” to welcome everyone back into the transformed space.
