y Gaer celebrates National Poetry Day with readings, writing and art

1 Oct 2026

y Gaer Library, Museum and Art Gallery is celebrating National Poetry Day on 1 October with a series of activities showcasing the creativity of local readers and writers.

The occasion has inspired special sessions from two of y Gaer’s regular literary groups.

Members of the monthly Readaround group set aside their usual format, in which one member selects a poem and a piece of prose for discussion. Instead, each participant brought along a favourite poem to share, creating a rich mix of classic and contemporary voices.

The Brecon Library Poetry Group, which welcomes both readers and practising writers, responded to this year’s National Poetry Day theme, Wonder, by writing and sharing new work. A selection of these poems is now on display in the Atrium at y Gaer.

Both groups are free to attend and welcome new members. Readaround meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 4.15pm, while the Poetry Group meets on the second and fourth Fridays at 11am.

Poetry’s close relationship with visual art will also be celebrated in a special event on Wednesday 7 October at 7pm. Marking the final days of the popular exhibition The Art of Meg Stevens: Local Nature and Landscapes, the evening will feature readings of botanical poetry and prose inspired by the plants depicted in the artist’s evocative paintings.

Please note that Readaround will not meet on 7 October.
