A local volunteer shares how giving a few hours a week can make a real difference. Volunteering is at the heart of many community services, and in Llandrindod Wells, one resident has discovered just how rewarding it can be to become a Cultural Services Volunteer:
My Journey as a Powys Museum and Library Volunteer
In 2025, I found myself looking for a fresh volunteering opportunity. I was already volunteering with a charity but wished to connect with my local community here in Llandrindod Wells. That is when I discovered that Cultural Services were looking for volunteers to support the museum and library. It sounded ideal – a chance to support literacy, history, and local culture all in one. The process was incredibly smooth. After applying, a friendly interview and DBS checks, I completed my online training, giving me a good foundation. By my first shift I felt fully prepared and excited to get stuck in. From day one, I felt welcomed. I started by reshelving books — something I genuinely enjoyed, though I joke that they save them all up for me every Thursday now! There is something satisfying about keeping the books organised and accessible.
Over time, my role has expanded. I now split my time between the museum and the library, helping with a variety of tasks. No two Thursdays are the same. Whether being a friendly face in the library or utilising my skills to assist with museum projects, I feel I’m making a tangible difference. Volunteering here has been a rewarding and positive experience. It has allowed me to use old skills, learn new skills, meet interesting people, and give back to a service at the heart of Llandrindod Wells.
Looking to volunteer, I cannot recommend Powys Cultural Services Volunteer Programme enough! Taking that first step was a great decision, and I look forward to many more Thursdays to come.
