Summer Reading Challenge Volunteers

Ages 14–25 | Mid‑July – End of August

The Summer Reading Challenge is developed by The Reading Agency, and each year thousands of children take part through their local library. This summer’s theme is Read to the Beat, which celebrates music, rhythm, and creativity – encouraging children to discover new stories and enjoy reading throughout the holidays.

What’s the opportunity?

Join your local Powys library and help families take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. You’ll be supporting children aged 4-11 as they sign up, choose books, and get involved with this year’s activities. It’s a great way to build experience, develop skills, and contribute to a community project that inspires young readers.

Who can apply?

Anyone aged 14–25 who is:

  • Friendly, approachable, and reliable
  • Comfortable engaging with children and families
  • Willing to get involved and learn as you go
  • Interested in books, reading, supporting your community, or gaining experience

No previous experience needed – full guidance and support will be provided.

What you’ll do

  • Welcome children and families and help them sign up for the challenge
  • Hand out materials and track children’s progress
  • Create displays linked to the “Read to the Beat” theme
  • Prepare resources for activities (including craft or music‑themed sessions)
  • Support staff during library events
  • Help keep the children’s area organised

What you’ll gain

  • Experience working with families and the public
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Confidence in a busy, customer‑facing role
  • The chance to make a meaningful difference to children’s reading confidence
  • You’ll be able to request a reference after completing your summer sessions, which can help with things like job applications, apprenticeships, or UCAS personal statements.

Training and support

  • An induction to help you settle in
  • Ongoing support from staff on site
  • Clear guidance throughout your volunteering
  • Enhanced DBS check required for volunteers aged 16–25 (arranged by us)

Time commitment

Ideally, 1-3 hours per week from mid‑July to the end of August. Detail to be confirmed when we meet you.

If you’re still unsure or have any questions, feel free to contact your local Powys library and they’ll be happy to help.
