Powys Pupils Inspired by Authors in Local Library Workshops
School children across Powys have been taking part in inspiring workshops with popular children’s authors as part of the Stars of the Shelves scheme, held in libraries across the county.
Funded by the Welsh Government Culture Division and coordinated by the Books Council of Wales, the initiative brought together schools and libraries to celebrate books and reading. Between January and March 2025, 554 learners from 16 schools in Powys had the opportunity to meet authors in person.
The workshops featured celebrated writers such as Catherine Barr, Daniel Morden, Beatrice Wallbank, Mari Lovgreen, and Claire Fayers, who led creative sessions designed to spark imagination and foster a love of reading.
A recent report by the National Literacy Trust highlighted the impact of such visits, noting that children who meet authors are significantly more likely to enjoy reading in their free time.
Helgard Krause, Chief Executive of the Books Council of Wales, said:
“We are so pleased that this brilliant partnership has enabled so many children to take part in these special workshops. Author visits have been shown to be powerful ways of helping children connect with literacy, and, thanks to funding from Welsh Government and the commitment of the librarians, children across Powys have been able to enjoy activities and discussions to inspire reading.”
Workshops were hosted in local libraries across Powys – and for one school, transport support was provided to ensure that even learners from rural areas could attend.
