Number Up powers up maths confidence in Powys parents and carers.

Maths and numbers are all around us, helping us to make sense of the world but for some, maths can be a challenge, which is why Powys Library Service has developed Number Up, a project which aims to grow maths-confidence in parents and carers.

Number Up offers a variety of ways for parents and carers to improve their numeracy skills and ignite a passion for maths throughout the family.  From the start of the school holidays, families can access the Number Up book collections at all Powys branch libraries.  With fun stories, colourful illustrations and engaging activities, these books make learning maths enjoyable and exciting for children of all ages. In time for the summer holidays, board games from dominos to snakes and ladders will be laid out on tables across libraries in Powys so families can have fun whilst boosting their everyday number confidence.

Number Up will be offering a variety of learning opportunities for free, from bitesize maths courses to formal qualifications that can open doors to new job opportunities or further education.  Courses can be accessed online or in person, with library users able to borrow an iPad or laptop to support their learning.

Cllr David Selby, Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, stated, “Numeracy skills are a part of everyday life, whether we are paying bills, measuring ingredients for cooking, or helping our children with their homework. However, lots of people can struggle with numbers and may feel embarrassed about it. Number Up is a fun way to build confidence and skills, making home budgeting easier and, hopefully, helping parents and carers get ahead in their work.”

According to the National Survey of Adult Skills in Wales, 51% of adults in Wales were found to have Entry Level Numeracy or below. With 55% of Powys households earning below the Powys average income, improving job prospects and enhancing money management skills could make a significant difference.

Number Up is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and will run until December 2024.  To find out more visit www.storipowys.org.uk/number-up or contact the project via
