September 28th: Taxidermy - a Victorian Passion
From immortalising hunting trophies, dearly loved pets or scenes of kittens taking tea, taxidermy was a Victorian passion that evolved, filling our museums with lifelike representations of wildlife from across the World.
However, from the 1950’s our appreciation of displays of stuffed animals declined, a change perhaps driven by our enthusiasm for wildlife films that allow us to appreciate the beauty of living animals in their natural habitats.
Slowly but surely stuffed birds and animals were removed from display, but Y Gaer retains some intriguing examples from a diva’s chihuahua to a white crow, each of whose tale you’ll hear during this amble around our museum.
Please note: This event will be held in the medium of English with references to the Welsh terms.
