Digital Support Volunteer - y Gaer
To provide digital and IT support for library users who wish to learn or improve their skills in using new technology. Some of our volunteers work with customers on an ad hoc 1:1 basis and some lead ‘Appy Hour’ which is a drop-in session that takes place on a weekly basis.
Tasks
Your role may include supporting library users to do some, or all, of the following:
Learn about the basic set up and functions on IOS and Android based hand-held devices.
Use on-line library resources – e-books, audio books, etc.
Connect devices on-line / on to wi-fi.
Use messaging apps e.g., Whatsapp, Messenger.
Set up an email account and understand its basic functions.
Use an in-built camera and software that uses one e.g. Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.
Learn about personal online security.
Use online platforms for banking, shopping, booking appointments, etc
Carry out Internet research and develop an awareness of how to gauge whether or not a website is trustworthy.
Qualities
Good working knowledge of and confidence using IOS and Android based hand-held devices.
A friendly and welcoming manner with excellent people skills.
Good listening skills, patience and tact.
Ability to communicate instructions clearly – teaching experience and/or presentation skills would be an advantage.
Good problem-solving skills.
Flexibility and reliability.
Ability to work without supervision.
An enhanced DBS certificate is required for this role.
Training
As a good level of IT skills is a pre-requisite, there is no formal training for this role but guidance on what online/digital resources are available and how to use them will be given. You will also need to complete online Powys County online Fire, Health & Safety; Manual Handling and Cyber Security & GDPR Training.
Time Commitment:
Ideally, 2 hours per week, either during ‘Appy Hour’ (times for different sites) or on an ad hoc arrangement as directed by library staff when individual requests for support are made.
